Your Tipping Policy Review (UK)
JustTip prompts you when yours is due for a review, and this article explains what that involves.
In short: Your tipping policy has a review date, and we email you when it is due. Reply to confirm nothing has changed, or tell us what has. If the review date passes without a review, your tronc cannot be processed, and tips are not paid out through the tronc until the review is completed.

Why you have a policy
UK tipping law requires employers to have a written tipping policy where tips are paid at a place of business on more than an occasional basis. The policy must say how tips are dealt with and shared, and it must be available to all your staff. If you change it, your staff need to see the new version. This law applies in England, Wales and Scotland.
Your policy is created as part of your tronc setup and appears on the first page of the tronc flow. See Run Your Tronc (UK).
Complete your review
- Look out for our email. When your policy is due for review, we email you with the date it is due. You do not need to prepare anything in advance.
- Choose one of three options.
- Confirm no change. If how you share tips has not changed, reply to confirm and we record the review against your account.
- Make an amendment. Tell us what has changed, for example a new split method, a new staff category or a change in how service charge is treated, and we update the policy for you.
- Review it yourself. Your current policy is on the first page of the tronc flow. You can make minor changes there, as long as it stays compliant with tipping law and reflects what your business actually does.
- Keep your policy in line with what you do. If your split has changed but your policy has not, your policy no longer describes your practice. Reply to the review email with what changed and we will bring the two back in line.
What happens if you do not respond
An expired tipping policy blocks tronc processing. If your review date passes and the policy has not been reviewed, your tips are not paid out through the tronc until the review is completed, so reply before the due date.
A policy that does not describe what you actually do can also cause problems in a dispute. A worker can bring a tribunal complaint about your written tipping policy within 3 months, and compensation can be up to GBP 5,366 (from 6 April 2026).
